We are greatly appreciative of your interest in furthering the needs of the students at Coconut Grove Elementary School.
Please find a list of items CGE PTA has paid for to date. Our media center is on the top of our priorities to update; electrical update, new tables and chairs, as well as a near overhaul of the book collection as students and parents have noticed many
of the books are vastly outdated. Our kids need your HELP!

Updated what CGE PTA has done so far.

Student Award

Hello all,

Tonight from 5 to 7 p.m. Asa Carey, a Coconut Grove Elementary School 5th-grader will receive first prize for his entry in the 2011 Black History 3-5 Elementary School Essay Contest!!!!
This is one of the MANY, MANY amazing opportunities for students in this school thanks to the new principal's efforts to put the students on the map - and another amazing win for the charity Asa Carey is a part of.
Asa Carey, 11, a resident of Coconut Grove is the President of the Joshua's Heart Foundation's (http://www.joshuasheart.org/) Junior Advisory Board, and as such wrote his essay on the wonderful work they do like, back packs full of food for kids, collecting clothes for orphans at His House orphanage in Miami Lakes and Thanksgiving food distributions.

Joshua's Heart Foundation was started by 10-year-old Joshua Williams when he was only five years old after seeing a program on starving children and he and his mother, Claudia McLean jumped in to do something locally to help. Joshua is Asa's best friend of five years since Asa Carey attended Fisher Island Day School, a prestigious private school where Asa Carey attended on academic scholarship since the tender age of six. Joshua's Heart has grown from a small food distribution to many varied fundraisers and distributions and contributions all over Miami-Dade County! Joshua and Claudia themselves cannot attend tonight because Joshua is receiving an award himself from Barry University! Congratulations again Joshua!! But Joshua will be present on Friday at 10 a.m. downtown in the school Board 1450 NE 2nd Ave during the 2011 Awards Reception and Ceremony and Black History Program!

Asa Carey has also gotten a perfect score on the Math portion of the SSATs this year, and a total score of 97% in the nation! He is a Gifted student at Coconut Grove Elementary School, an anchor in the Broadcasting program and most recently qualified for the school's Spelling Bee- which if he wins, will then compete in the Miami Herald Spelling Bee!

Congrats Coconut Grove Elementary School and Mrs. Marmesh and Dr. Lopez! Congratulations Joshua's Heart Foundation! Working together we are all winners!!
Asa Carey hopes we can all see you there!!!

Warmest Regards,

Yvonne Carey-Lederer

French performance

Francais has joined with Cge Pta to present:

Laurence Yadi
& Nicolas Cantillon

Thursday, February 17th | 7.30 pm | @ Theatre of the Coconut Grove School elementary
Compagnie 7273 in Miami
Listen & Watch - Romance
Thursday, February 17th at the Theatre of the Coconut Grove School elementary at 7.30 pm (3351 Matilda Street, Miami, FL 33133)
Laurence Yadi and Nicolas Cantillon have put together a piece of work of fierce sensuality. How so? Because each and every movement comes from their own invention and from a retrospective look back, from Lancelot and Guinevere, to Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg in “A Bout de souffle,” to Joaquin Phoenix and Gwyneth Paltrow in the recent film, Two Lovers. From the courtly love of knights and the up-in-the-air kind of romanticism of Jean-Luc Godard, to the trace of adolescence that some adults retain throughout their lives. Laurence Yadi and Nicolas Cantillon don’t rest on their laurels; they have too much pride in their work for that. They rise up, become entangled, like the roots of a baobab tree and let go when the embrace becomes too much to bear.
Listen & Watch (40 minutes) brings together on stage the dancer/choreographer Nicolas Cantillon and the American guitarist Sir Richard Bishop. The performance will be followed by a thirty-minute session after the performance where the audience members will have a chance to meet the performers. This will be followed by a solo performance of On Stage by Laurence Yadi. The evening’s concluding performance will last ten minutes.
Sales tickets in advance at the Coconut Grove School and the Alliance Francaise / adults: $ 12, 5-12 years old: $8
Advanced sales at Coconut Grove Elem:                                                                                                                                          Wednesday ,February 9  8am-9pm in the schools court yard.                                                                                                       Wednesday ,February 16  2-3 pm in schools court yard.
At the door / adults: $15, 5-12 years old: $12

6800 SW 60th Street, South Miami, FL 33143

You say you've been before?  I bet if you come again, you might learn something new!
You've been but may have board members that have not attended?  It's not just for President!  Please invite any of your board members to join us.  Remember, we are always on the look out for what next member will be moving up....we all move on!
Come and network with others in your same position....Share your best ideas and things that have worked best for you........meet and mentor a president that is still trying to figure it all out.  We are a community and a family beyond the bounds of our schools.
Our Vice President of Regions and Units, Sandra West, will be with us for this event.  It would be hard to find, all in one place, the experience and knowledge Sandra brings to us with PTA.
Have a question?  Have a problem?  Here is your chance to figure it out!
Please reply to this email and let me know you're coming, and who you might be bringing along.  We want to be sure the room is set right for the number of attendees.
A quick reply will be much appreciated.

Oldest school in Miami-Dade

South Florida's historic schools build new legacies
BY HOWARD COHEN
hcohen@MiamiHerald.com

In any social studies class in Miami-Dade, children might learn of World Wars I and II, the sinking of the Titanic or when the first World Series was played.
In many instances, teachers could simply point to the very walls of their classrooms, as several schools in Miami-Dade and Broward -- Miami Senior High, Fort Lauderdale High, Neva King Cooper School in Homestead and Coconut Grove Elementary -- actually predate these events.
Coconut Grove Elementary, for instance, is credited as Miami-Dade's first school, dating to 1887. Miami Senior High is the city's first high school, with its roots in a makeshift classroom in 1896.
It is this sense of history that has led many to champion the schools and fight to keep them intact. Some are also on the hunt for memorabilia, much of it lost to time.

Our School Turns 100 This Year!

Dear Parents, Committee Members, and Esteemed Friends,

Coconut Grove Elementary turns 100 this year! We are the oldest school in Dade County, but we are also one of the jewels in Miami for another reason - our French program. CGES has the task of providing a quality education in a stimulating but safe environment to nearly 500 children of all races and ethnicities in our community with limited federal, state and local funding. This year, after identifying the specific needs of our students, we have committed to two, major, long-term goals:

 SmartBoards
Complete update of the Media Center including a new computer lab

The Coconut Grove Elementary PTA will work in alignment with the Principal to achieve these goals through the Coconut Grove Elementary School Capital Campaign!

The Capital Campaign (which includes EdBucks, Book Fair, Holiday Shop, Mother/Son and Father/Daughter dances, and all Parking Fundraisers) will be the sole source of funding that will allow our school to operate in a manner meeting the urgent need to adequately reflect the technology and standards of the present and future world across curriculums.
We need to raise approximately $100,000 dollars via our Capital Campaign to upgrade academically in order for our students to be prepared to thrive as entrants to competitive secondary education and post-secondary education.

While this may seem like a steep number, it can be met if we strengthen our commitment to Coconut Grove Elementary. Together we can help make sure that our students have a safe, stimulating and academically superior school to turn for their education.

By contributing to Coconut Grove Elementary School’s Capital Campaign, you'll be recognized as a donor in a variety of ways:

                $100:  Friend of CGES
                $250:  Fellow of CGES
                $350: Stingray Society
                $500: Champion of CGES
                $1000: Coconut Grove Heritage Society
                $2500: Corporate Sponsor
                $5000:  CGES Founders Circle

You'll also enjoy the satisfaction of knowing that your generosity will help many children achieve their dreams by getting a quality education.

Stingray Patch

Congratulations to Kate Carrick, Slow Food Miami and to all the parents teachers and students who worked so hard to create our spectacular Stingray Patch!!! We must add a special thanks to Ramsey Sullivan and Jonathan Blum for their dedication and all their hard work. We are so lucky to have so many amazing parents who donated both time and money to make this very special project a reality for our children.

Kate:
"Slowfood & Coconut Grove Garden club helped us with the first garden
and then it just snowballed from there. The kids are VERY proud of their gardens!"
