Winter Training

PTA Winter Training for Region III

Moving forward, we have a Region III Winter Training event on the horizon.
It will be held on Tuesday evening, February 8th at South Miami K-8 Center.  PTA President Marilyn Correa-Gonzalez is welcoming us to her school.
6800 SW 60th Street, South Miami, FL 33143
Miami-Dade County | Map
You say you've been before?  I bet if you come again, you might learn something new!
You've been but may have board members that have not attended?  It's not just for President!  Please invite any of your board members to join us.  Remember, we are always on the look out for what next member will be moving up....we all move on!
Come and network with others in your same position....Share your best ideas and things that have worked best for you........meet and mentor a president that is still trying to figure it all out.  We are a community and a family beyond the bounds of our schools.
Our Vice President of Regions and Units, Sandra West, will be with us for this event.  It would be hard to find, all in one place, the experience and knowledge Sandra brings to us with PTA.
Have a question?  Have a problem?  Here is your chance to figure it out!
Please reply to this email and let me know you're coming, and who you might be bringing along.  We want to be sure the room is set right for the number of attendees.
A quick reply will be much appreciated.
Flyer attached you can use for your board members.

Oldest school in Miami-Dade

South Florida's historic schools build new legacies
BY HOWARD COHEN
hcohen@MiamiHerald.com

In any social studies class in Miami-Dade, children might learn of World Wars I and II, the sinking of the Titanic or when the first World Series was played.
In many instances, teachers could simply point to the very walls of their classrooms, as several schools in Miami-Dade and Broward -- Miami Senior High, Fort Lauderdale High, Neva King Cooper School in Homestead and Coconut Grove Elementary -- actually predate these events.
Coconut Grove Elementary, for instance, is credited as Miami-Dade's first school, dating to 1887. Miami Senior High is the city's first high school, with its roots in a makeshift classroom in 1896.
It is this sense of history that has led many to champion the schools and fight to keep them intact. Some are also on the hunt for memorabilia, much of it lost to time.

Our School Turns 100 This Year!

Dear Parents, Committee Members, and Esteemed Friends,

Coconut Grove Elementary turns 100 this year! We are the oldest school in Dade County, but we are also one of the jewels in Miami for another reason - our French program. CGES has the task of providing a quality education in a stimulating but safe environment to nearly 500 children of all races and ethnicities in our community with limited federal, state and local funding. This year, after identifying the specific needs of our students, we have committed to two, major, long-term goals:

 SmartBoards
Complete update of the Media Center including a new computer lab

The Coconut Grove Elementary PTA will work in alignment with the Principal to achieve these goals through the Coconut Grove Elementary School Capital Campaign!

The Capital Campaign (which includes EdBucks, Book Fair, Holiday Shop, Mother/Son and Father/Daughter dances, and all Parking Fundraisers) will be the sole source of funding that will allow our school to operate in a manner meeting the urgent need to adequately reflect the technology and standards of the present and future world across curriculums.
We need to raise approximately $100,000 dollars via our Capital Campaign to upgrade academically in order for our students to be prepared to thrive as entrants to competitive secondary education and post-secondary education.

While this may seem like a steep number, it can be met if we strengthen our commitment to Coconut Grove Elementary. Together we can help make sure that our students have a safe, stimulating and academically superior school to turn for their education.

By contributing to Coconut Grove Elementary School’s Capital Campaign, you'll be recognized as a donor in a variety of ways:

                $100:  Friend of CGES
                $250:  Fellow of CGES
                $350: Stingray Society
                $500: Champion of CGES
                $1000: Coconut Grove Heritage Society
                $2500: Corporate Sponsor
                $5000:  CGES Founders Circle

You'll also enjoy the satisfaction of knowing that your generosity will help many children achieve their dreams by getting a quality education.

Stingray Patch

Congratulations to Kate Carrick, Slow Food Miami and to all the parents teachers and students who worked so hard to create our spectacular Stingray Patch!!! We must add a special thanks to Ramsey Sullivan and Jonathan Blum for their dedication and all their hard work. We are so lucky to have so many amazing parents who donated both time and money to make this very special project a reality for our children.

Kate:
"Slowfood & Coconut Grove Garden club helped us with the first garden
and then it just snowballed from there. The kids are VERY proud of their gardens!"
